Belgian colonization of 1844
See also: Rafael Carrera
The colonization began with the expedition of the ship sent by the monarch Leopoldo I of Belgium in 1842.43 When the Belgians observed the natural wealth that the Izabal region possessed, several colonists decided to settle in Santo Tomas de Castilla to build infrastructure in the region; the government gave them the region in perpetuity in exchange for the company paying sixteen thousand pesos each year to the Guatemalan government.44
In 1844, the district of Santo Tomás de Castilla was colonized by the Community of the Union, sponsored by the Compañía Belga de Colonización; 45 the government of the State of Guatemala, had granted the district of Santo Tomás to said company by means of the decree of the Constituent Assembly of Guatemala on May 4, 184346. The colonists had to convert to Catholicism and become Guatemalan citizens, but they had the privilege of having their own government.43
However, by 1850, the colony had already failed due to the inhospitable region and the Belgian settlers had dispersed within the Republic of Guatemala.47
