AFGHANISTAN KABUL SHAHI SILVER DRACHM ca. 850-1026 AD. SS1.2
Obverse: Horseman advancing right, with blundered Brahmi legend Shahi Deva to right

The Shahis, Shahi or Kabul Shahi were pre-Muslim rulers of Kabulistan (the area around the city of Kabul in modern-day Afghanistan) and the Punjab (in northern Pakistan today). Hinduism and, especially in the beginning, Buddhism flourished under the Shahis.
For centuries, the Shahis resisted Turkish, Arab and Persian conquerors from the west, thereby preventing the arrival of Islam in the north of the East Indies. The last Shahi ruler (rajah) was defeated in 1026 by the Turkish-Muslim conqueror Mahmud of Ghazni.
